Yes, I'm watching all 15 pre-Oscar shows right now but I'm still kind of high from yesterday's Spirit Awards. You may have heard this before, but independent films are so cool. Making no money and living off ritz crackers is not so appealing, but going to this "party" definitely is! Rainn Wilson was a delightful host and the people seemed really excited to be there. Apparently, the Bob Dylan biopic "I'm Not There" and "Juno" and "The Savages" were the big independent favorites - also there is no longer any doubt the world is about to become prettier with another Jolie-Pitt on the way. Wooo hoooo! And I'll take this opportunity to apologize to every other pregnant woman out there now or ever - it's just not normal to look that bloody beautiful. But what a delight to see her and that guy she collects orphans with.
However, I must note the highlight by far of the show was the musical interpretations of the best picture nominees. Steve Zahn sang a rendition of "How does it Feel" with different words that I can't find anywhere on youtube - but I promise to keep looking (though I wish I could promise to become cool and capture it off my DVR myself - but I'm very busy blogging and cleaning bathrooms) - anyhoo it was a delight. David Alan Grier did one for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" which I regrettably knew nothing about until last night and despite Julian Schnabel looking more slothly than usual with his Hugh Hefner pajama top it looked really beautiful and heartbreaking - but Grier was a riot.
OH - and another funny music part was when this funny cast of characters sang a song called "Tire Swing" from Juno that I've heard and do enjoy but two things: (1) the main girl Kimya Dawson was introduced as being from a the band "The Moldy Peaches" - I don't like to pass judgment [all day long] but eww - that's not a good band name and (2) the "keyboardist" and I use that term lightly - sat on the floor with what appeared to be a multicolored xylophone from my kid's daycare - I thought Bert and Ernie might pop up at any minute. However, with all of that I was still very impressed - and quite entertained.
Now bring on Jon Stewart!
